Its neighbours are Armenia and Georgia in the west, the Russian Federation in the north, Iran in

On August 30,  1991 the Azerbaijan Parliament declared its independence. On December 3,  1991 the people of Azerbaijan voted overwhelmingly in a referendum to approve of the formation of the new, indepenend and democratic Republic of Azebaijan.

Azerbaijan encompasses nine climatic zones, from the cooler temperatures of the mountain regions groups to the subtropical climate of the coastal lowlands.  It is blessed with rich natural resources including oil, natural gas and mineral reserves. Baki, the capital of Azerbaijan, is located in the Absheron Peninsula. This city, which has an ancient history, has become a political, and economic centere in the Transcaucasia, like in the 10th and 11th centuries, when Baki was an importand trading centre on the caravan and sea ways.

Since the beginning of the 20th century Azerbaijan has been among the world's leading oil and gas producers. The urban features of Baki with its neo-Gothic and Renaissance-style mansions are reminders of wealth, which the "black gold" bestowed to Azerbaijan and this unique city. Oil Barons as Morgan, Rockefeller and the Nobel brothers, who were involved in the oil businnes, made their contribution to the european style of the town.

Baki has much to offer to visitors, because of the location and historical development, it has a marked individuality. Every sightseeing tour has to include the Maiden's Tower, which is the city's landmark (built in the 12th century), the city's old town with the Palace of the Shirvan Shakhs and the Dzhuma Mosque.
